It is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of fish farming in any country.
Sri Lanka is blessed to have a rich Aquaculture with rare species of fish and other aquatic life that are not found anywhere else in the world. When it comes to Aquaculture in Sri Lanka, they still carry out fishing using traditional methods. Therefore, the Aquaculture here lacks new technological methods, due to which there has never been a major investment in the field, even though it has a large potential of being a profitable investment due to the trading of rare aquatic animals and fish. The global market for shrimps was valued at USD 45 billion in 2018, and it is estimated to register a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period, 2019-2024.
According to the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) website, the country is currently home to 24 seafood exporters, whose top five exports consist of tuna (in fresh, chilled, and frozen forms), shrimps and prawns, crabs and lobsters, shark fins, and fish maws. Sri Lanka also hosts 32 EU-approved seafood processing plants which successfully comply with the stringent regulations imposed by importing countries and adhere to the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Friend of Sea, and other food security environment-friendly requirements.
SRI LANKA ROLE
Based on the facts mentioned above, our team of experts already conducted a fact-finding mission and it was revealed that there is a great potential for export of marine-based food such as SPF Shrimp through development of aquaculture farm system which has very high potential as well as profitability for the investment.
Key Market Trends
Sri Lankan shrimp market is handled by a number of key drivers and has a ready-made market for the harvest. However, there is a possibility to get ample inquiries/orders from many countries.
In order to cater to the rising demand for crab varieties produced in Sri Lanka, the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) has initiated the establishment of crab cultivation zones in Hambantota and Batticaloa. Known as crab cities, these zones would promote private sector participation in crab culture and harvesting.
Also the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) initiated a community-based bivalve farm in the Puttalam Lagoon to investigate the potential of bivalve farming in Sri Lanka for local and export markets. Owing to the rising success of the bivalve culture in the Puttalam Lagoon, NARA has initiated the plans to gazette a zone in the Puttalam Lagoon for Oyster Culture. Today, nearly 100 small and mid-scale oyster farmers continue to harvest oysters for exportation through the private sector to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.
Moreover, the National Aquaculture Authority of Sri Lanka took the initiative to launch a new sea cucumber hatchery in Mannar.
In addition to producing seafood varieties, offshore fish farming can also be used for organic aquaculture production, which provides the country’s aquaculture farmers the ability to target high-end seafood markets around the world.
To maintain the product quality and environmental impact of Sri Lanka’s fish farms, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources monitors the fish products processed for export markets. The Fishery Product Quality Control Unit (FPQCU) monitors the process of culturing, harvesting and processing of seafood by applying a HACCP-based quality system to aquaculture production.
